I'm here tonight to ask that as elected representatives of the residents of West Orange you work together to consider the resolution against Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism. In being elected to Town Council you become the advocates and voice of all of the residents of West Orange. Your ideas and platforms played a role in your election. But you were also elected to represent us.

Not some of us. All of us. Not just those of us that look like you. Not just those of us that agree with you. So I would ask that you show the same empathy I've seen when someone complains about noise or trash pick up even though that problem isn't outside your front door.That you hear your fellow residents, your neighbors, your constituents when they present a problem and ask for your help in supporting a solution.

Even if that problem is anti-Arab and Islamophobic statements and behaviors in our Township. On Facebook groups that associate themselves with our town, screamed at High School students as they exercise their first amendment rights, or even hurled from this very podium, in public comment to this body. So we know, that you know, this is a real problem before this Council as it's happened at your own meetings, in your own chambers, at your own podium.

Yet I am hopeful. Hopeful that you will take up this Resolution. Hopeful you will engage with your neighbors. Hopeful that despite your past dismissal of this important and impactful issue, you will give it another look. Because that is all we can do, work together, to make our town a better place, inclusive and representative of all our residents. So please do your part and put the Resolution against Islamophobia and anti-Arab hate on your next agenda for discussion and a vote.
